On leaving college at the end of 1938 he joined the staff of the Commonwealth Oil Refineries and in the following year joined the militia. In 1940 he was called up for aircrew training as a fighter pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. By 1942 he was transferred to the New Guinea theatre of war, stationed at Port Moresby. On 13 April he set out on an attack over Lae, never to be heard of again. His short life was over. The news shattered his parents and it was only their innate Christian belief kept alive in the local Anglican church which gave them the strength to face the remainder of their earthly life.
